Pediatric Hypertension–Journey into why the National Pediatric Blood Pressure Awareness was founded

Please take a few minutes to visit www.bloodpressure4kids.org. An estimated 2 million children are walking around right now with undiagnosed hypertension (high blood pressure.) It could be your child. In children, this is typically an indicator of a serious underlying cause. Causes such as kidney or cardiac issues among other things. These can all be serious and if left untreated could potentially lead to organ failure or even possibly death.

Does your child’s physician routinely take their blood pressure? If yes, consider yourself among the fortunate few. For those of you who said no, the NPBPAF is working to change this. There is an alarming number of health care providers who see children regularly that does not take blood pressures. These are not limited to private practices. There are emergency rooms, and after hours clinics who still do not take blood pressures for children over the age of 3 when they are seen.

We urge you to help the NPBPAF by making a charitable donation today! No amount is too small. Your dollars will be put to great use ensuring that every child in the United States has routine blood pressure screens. This valuable screen can mean early detection for life threatening illnesses. Early detection means early treatment. If it were your child, wouldn’t you want to know if something was wrong? If your child’s healthcare provider does not do blood pressure screens at office visits, ask them to!

Donated funds will also be used to provide home blood pressure machines for families of children who have been diagnosed with a condition that requires them to have frequent readings in order to adjust their daily medications. These machines are usually not covered by health insurance and not every family can afford to pay out of pocket.

Please don’t think that this could not happen to your child. It can and does. It affects children whether rich or poor, regardless of race, gender, or age. This could be happening to a child you care about right now. The only way to diagnose hypertension and the conditions that cause it at the earliest stages before symptoms appear and damage has started is with routine blood pressure monitoring.

Join others from around the country to help the NPBPAF in their first campaign.
